Our verdict

Grasshopper is the rare virtual phone system that charges per account, not per seat: Solo Plus and Small Business include unlimited users on one license. A 7-day no-card trial, 24/7 support on every plan, free number porting and 20+ years of operating history make it a low-risk pick for a small business's first phone system.

Grasshopper is a virtual phone system for small businesses and entrepreneurs, owned by GoTo since 2018. Founded in 2003 as GotVMail by Siamak Taghaddos and David Hauser and rebranded in 2009, it gives a business a dedicated local, toll-free or vanity phone number that runs on the owner’s existing mobile phone or computer – no new hardware required. Grasshopper says it is trusted by 400,000+ entrepreneurs.

Calling, texting and voicemail live in one unified conversation view across the official iOS, Android and desktop apps. Calls can be forwarded and routed through phone menus (IVR) with custom greetings and business hours, and simultaneous call handling keeps lines open. Business texting covers SMS and MMS, with an automated instant text response for missed calls, and voicemail transcription turns messages into searchable text. Virtual fax is included.

Grasshopper also offers a virtual receptionist with three coverage options – an AI receptionist, a live human receptionist or a hybrid of the two – plus AI call summaries, AI call transcripts and AI-detected sentiment on customer interactions. Number porting is free, so an existing business number can move to Grasshopper.

There are three plans, billed monthly or annually with savings of over 20% on annual billing. True Solo starts at $14 per month billed annually ($18 billed monthly) with 1 user, 1 phone number and 1 extension. Solo Plus starts at $25 per month billed annually ($32 monthly) with unlimited users, 1 number and 3 extensions. Small Business starts at $55 per month billed annually with unlimited users, 4 phone numbers and unlimited extensions. Unlike most VoIP rivals, Grasshopper does not charge per user on Solo Plus and Small Business. All plans include a 7-day free trial with no credit card required, a 7-day money-back guarantee and 24/7 customer support.

Grasshopper is positioned for solopreneurs and small teams of roughly two to ten people – contractors, photographers, consultants, real estate agents, therapists, retailers and other service businesses. GoTo steers enterprise and mid-market buyers to GoTo Connect. One confirmed gap: Grasshopper currently has no third-party CRM integrations and no public API.

Who it's for

  • Solopreneurs and freelancers who want a dedicated business number on their existing phone
  • Small teams of 2-10 that want to share one business number without per-user fees

Not ideal for

  • Teams that need native CRM integrations or a public API
  • Enterprise and mid-market organizations (GoTo points them to GoTo Connect)

How we tested

We researched Grasshopper in October 2026 using the official website, the official pricing page and its monthly/annual toggle, and Grasshopper's official product information page. Plan names, included users, numbers and extensions were confirmed against the pricing page's plan data, and prices against two official pages. No hands-on testing was performed.
